Mountaineering in Summer conditions
For hill walkers who would like to experience Classic Mountain walks in Snowdonia or Scotland safely in summer conditions.
Guided experiences include; Classic Mountain Walks or Mountain Scrambles include; Snowdon Horse Shoe – Crib Coch and LLiwedd, North Ridge of Tryfan , Cuillin Ridge, Isle of Skye.
Have a quality and safe mountain day with a professional Mountain Instructor -who holds the Mountaineering Instructors Certificate – the highest National Award for instructing, teaching and coaching all levels of rock climbing and mountaineering in the UK in both summer and winter conditions.
Mountaineering in Winter conditions
For experienced hill walkers who would like to explore the mountains safely in winter conditions there are several short courses available.
All courses are based in the Cairngorms.
Other areas by prior arrangement – Glencoe, Ben Nevis, NW Highlands – Torridon, Liathach, An Teallach.
Guided Winter Walking – 2 Days
For those wishing to enjoy winter walking in the Cairngorms or for gaining further winter walking experience before joining a winter skills course.

Introduction to Winter Skills – 2 or 3 or 5 Days
To introduce the winter skills and techniques to move around the mountains in winter
Ratio 1:6
To include;
- Selection of personal winter kit
- Personal movement skills on snow to include; kicking steps, use of ice axe for walking, self belay, cutting steps and self arrest. Use of crampons in ascent and descent
- Emergency procedures
- Avalanche awareness and safe route choice
- Winter navigation
The programme is flexible to take into account individual needs, aims and weather.
NB:
- 5 Day course allows time to cover additional areas – poor visibility navigation, route planning to take into account weather, conditions and avalanche risk, together with more days to consolidate skills

Winter Mountaineering Course – 2 or 5 Days
Introduces techniques to tackle winter ‘scrambling’ terrain, up to grade 1 on Britain’s mountains.
Ratio 1:4
To include;
- Winter movement skills using ice axe and crampons in ascent and descent
- Movement over grade 1 and 2 winter snow and scrambling terrain
- Basic rope work and belaying using the rope alone together a sling and a krab
- Constructing and using snow anchors
- Selecting and using rock anchors
- Abseiling using snow anchors
- Avalanche awareness and safe route choice
- Winter navigation
The programme is flexible to take into account individual needs, aims and weather.

- 5 Day course allows time to cover additional areas – emergency procedures, emergency shelters and in more depth together with more days to consolidate skills

Introduction to Winter Climbing – 2 days
Introduction to winter climbing techniques, whilst seconding a number of winter climbs, with the aim that you will be a competent second.

Use of ice axe and crampons for approaching winter climbs
Basic rope work to include;
- Tying into multi point anchors and belaying the leader and second
- Use of technical ice tools on snow and ice
- Coaching to develop personal climbing technique on ice and mixed ground
- Escaping from winter multi pitch climbs including abseiling from a variety of anchors
- Avalanche awareness and safe route choice

Introduction to Winter Lead Climbing – 2 Days or 5 Days
Introduction to the core skills to lead winter climbs at grade 1 or 2 confidently and competently. Participants will have the opportunity to lead at an appropriate grade

Recap on basic winter skills to include the use of ice axe and crampons for approaching winter climbs.
Basic rope work to include;
- Tying into multi point anchors and belaying the leader and second
- Introduction to winter snow belays and snow protection and to include rock protection – wires, hex’s and cams
- Use of technical ice tools on snow and ice
- Coaching to develop personal climbing technique on ice and mixed ground
- Escaping from winter multi pitch climbs including abseiling from a variety of anchors
- Avalanche awareness and safe route choice
- Winter navigation techniques
